Today, I ask you to choose Life or Death.
As Patti and I were doing our morning devotions in the book of Deuteronomy chapter 29, I found myself encouraged to share with you what the Lord Jesus Christ put on my heart. As I share, the scripture I will use will be in italics. and my comments will be normal fonts. My main focus in Deuteronomy will be Deu 30:16-20 " I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live" We are eternal beings, meaning that we will have a consciousness for eternity. We are very much aware of what is going on around us now and we will be very much aware of what is going on around us after we die, that is after our body dies. We will experience life or we will experience death. We will have a consciousness in either state. I would like to share with you our God's love for us. We can read in 2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. God stepped out of heaven into history to show us the way to eternal life. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth" God, in the form of man (Jesus Christ), made the way very clear to us. I want to stress here that Jesus claims "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." There are a lot of people that will tell you that all you have to do is "be good" or all you have to do is believe in Jesus. That's sounds good but there is a scripture that says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." There is only one way to have eternal life. The way Jesus teaches us. Jesus paid an unimaginable price, that we could have this gift of eternal life. To those who say all we have to do is be good, I would like to say "They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one." To those who say all you have to do is believe in Jesus I would like to say You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! The demons know there is one God and their end is the Lake of Fire, which is also known as Hell and also the Second Death. That's why they tremble!! Eternal life is Heaven and Eternal death is Hell. Remember here that God does not want one of us to perish in Hell, the second death!! We cannot come up with our own plan of salvation! There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. (Hell)
Let's look at what Jesus taught us during His short time here on earth concerning Eternal Life. There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Unless you are born again, you will not see the kingdom of God. You will not have Eternal life. There is absolutely no other way!! Please hear this. Your eternity depends on this. God is a spirit and we must worship Him in spirit. We cannot do it "our way". Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." Water and Spirit. This simply means that not only must we be naturally born, "water" but we must also be born of the Spirit. How are we born of the Spirit? "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."
And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. First we need to be honest with ourselves and admit that we are sinners. All of us. Ask yourself these questions. Have you ever told a lie? "all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
Have you ever looked at someone with lust? "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Have you ever hated anyone? Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. Have you ever stolen anything? It doesn't matter how big or little it was. The eighth commandment is You shall not steal. I've only asked you 4 out of 10 if the commandments. If you are honest with yourself you will have broken at least one of them; if not all. If you were to die today which an estimated 150,000 people will, And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, you will stand before God and be judged according to His Holy Laws. Guilty? Or Innocent? You will be one or the other. If you're guilty, you will have your part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Does this concern you? Eternity in Hell should scare you. Remember, The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Ok, back to the question, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible." Let me share with you here how God made this possible. "The soul who sins shall die." Jesus Christ was that man. He paid our price. This is the reason that God came as a man, to pay the ultimate price for our sins. Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross and suffered the wrath of God in our place when He took on your sins and mine. He was nailed to the cross about 9am in the morning. At noon, there was darkness over all the land. I believe this is when Jesus Christ received our sins and for three more grueling hours He hung there, waiting. Then about 3 in the afternoon, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" Shortly after that, Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. The scripture goes on to tell us that Jesus went to hell in our place. He suffered the Second Death in our place.
I recently had someone ask me that " if Jesus Christ was God, why did He die on the cross? God cannot die". Very good question. God didn't die on the cross, Jesus did! As a man. When Jesus cried out with the loud voice, that was His agony of being separated from God. Sin separates us from God. From the beginning Jesus and God have always been one. On the cross, they were separated. The scripture goes on to tell us that and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you. "Who then can be saved?" Again I go to the scriptures for that answer. If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. And again we read, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. When you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, which is the Spirit with which we must be born again, you will have the Spirit of God living in you which delivered Jesus from hell, which is remember, the Second Death. You will have received the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ which is Eternal Life with Him.
"But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, "I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; "that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; (Eternal Life)
